How to Choose the Perfect Decking

At Get Floors, did you know our Australian hardwoods are also popular decking materials? This is usually because their visual appearance combined with exceptional resilience makes them an excellent choice for an outdoor deck. We have a wide range of hardwoods available in different species, colours and plank sizes so you can choose the one that’s right for you. Here’s 4 tips to make your decision a little easier.

1. Look at the colours available

The thing to remember with hardwoods are they are natural materials and therefore differ in colour from plank to plank. It’s a good idea to see the wood so you get a better idea of the colours that run through it. For example, Blackbutt ranges from sandy gold to light brown with pinkish tones and Red Ironbark can be deep red to dark brown and medium nut.

2. Compare to your home exterior

It’s important to choose a wood that complements the colour of your home as this is the background to your decking. Consider complimentary shades that can give a slight distinction rather than a perfect match.

3. Think about the transition floor

As you move from outside to in, think about how the decking will transition into your interior floor. It might be worth considering a wood that is similar to your indoor floor for a seamless transition. It will also create a good balance between interior and exterior.

4. Don’t underestimate the sun

Depending on where the sun hits your yard, remember that darker woods will retain heat more than lighter woods. If it is going to be exposed to the sun for long periods, you might want to opt for a light wood like Grey Box where the colour varies between light sand and honey brown. If this isn’t an issue or if you have a cooler/shaded yard, darker boards like Jarrah (deep red) or Turpentine (chocolate/red brown) are good options.
