Hybrid flooring has quietly taken over the Australian home — it looks like timber, it’s genuinely waterproof, and it absorbs everything kids, pets and weeknight dinners can throw at it. With dozens of brands and pricing from $35 to $95 per square metre, choosing isn’t simple. This is the no-nonsense guide we wish every customer had before they walked into a showroom.

What is hybrid flooring?

Hybrid flooring is a rigid, layered floating floor that combines the waterproof performance of vinyl with the structural stability and click-lock installation of laminate. It’s called “hybrid” because it borrows the best qualities of both product types and merges them into one.

Every plank is built from four engineered layers, working together:

  • UV coating & wear layer on top — the unsung hero that shrugs off scratches, stains and sun fade.
  • Decorative layer with high-resolution timber or stone print. Modern processes mean premium hybrid is virtually indistinguishable from real timber at a glance.
  • Rigid core — either SPC (Stone Polymer Composite) or WPC (Wood Polymer Composite). This is what gives hybrid its strength, stability and waterproof performance.
  • Backing layer for acoustic dampening and moisture protection. Many premium products come pre-attached with cork or IXPE underlay.

The result is a floor that looks like timber, feels solid underfoot, handles water without swelling or warping, and installs quickly using a click-lock floating system over most existing subfloors.

SPC vs WPC: the real difference

The most common question we get — and the answer matters, because it changes where you should use the product, how it feels underfoot, and what you’ll pay.

— The all-rounder

SPC / Stone Polymer Composite

A dense blend of limestone powder, PVC and stabilisers. Extremely rigid, dimensionally stable, and impervious to water at a molecular level. Performs exceptionally well over Australian concrete slabs.

— The premium upgrade

WPC / Wood Polymer Composite

A foamed core of wood flour, PVC and a foaming agent. The air pockets make WPC softer, quieter and more comfortable underfoot — at a 20–30% premium and slightly less point-load resistance.

The pros & cons, honestly

No flooring product is perfect for every situation. Here’s the unvarnished version.

+ What it nails

  • 100% waterproofSpills, pet accidents, wet feet from the shower — no swelling, no warping.
  • Genuinely durableA 0.5mm+ wear layer handles pets, kids and furniture with 20–25 year warranties.
  • Dimensionally stableFar less expansion than laminate or timber — vital for Australia’s swings in temperature.
  • Quick to installClick-lock floating system over most existing subfloors. A 100m² home in 2–3 days.
  • Realistic timber lookEmbossed-in-register texture aligns surface ridges to the printed grain.
  • Low maintenanceSweep, mop, done. No polishing, no sealing, no special products.

– Where it falls short

  • Cannot be refinishedOnce the wear layer is gone (15–25 years), the floor is replaced — not sanded.
  • Firmer underfoot than timberNoticeable when standing for long stretches. A quality underlay helps significantly.
  • Acoustic considerationsWithout proper underlay it can sound hollow — check your strata’s IIC rating.
  • Not a luxury productIt looks like timber, but it isn’t. For a premium reno, engineered oak still wins.
  • Quality varies enormouslySub-$35/m² hybrid can look plastic and fail fast. You truly get what you pay for.

How much does it cost in Australia?

Pricing depends on the core type, wear layer thickness, brand, and whether you’re looking at supply-only or installed.

Supply only

Budget

$35–50/m²

Thinner 0.3mm wear layer, basic visuals and limited warranty. Fine for low-traffic rentals.

Most chosen
Mid-range

$50–75/m²

0.5mm wear layer, strong visuals and texture, 20+ year warranty. Sweet spot for most homes.

Premium

$75–95+/m²

0.55mm+ wear layer, EIR texture, wide-plank formats from premium European brands.

Supply + installation

Installed pricing typically runs $95–$150 per m² depending on the product, subfloor condition, and room complexity. Standard floating installation over a level concrete slab is at the lower end. Uneven subfloors, stair installations, or herringbone patterns push costs higher.

What pushes price up or down

  • Core type: SPC is cheaper than WPC.
  • Wear layer: 0.5mm+ costs more but lasts longer.
  • Plank size: Wide and long planks cost more than standard.
  • Pattern: Herringbone and chevron add 15–25% to installation.
  • Subfloor: Levelling compounds add $8–20/m² when needed.
  • Location: Sydney & Melbourne run 10–15% above regional pricing.

At Get Floors we carry hybrid from $35/m² through to premium ranges, and our price-beat guarantee means we’ll beat any competitor by $1/m² — so it’s worth getting a quote regardless of your budget.

Which rooms suit hybrid?

One of hybrid’s biggest advantages is that you can run it through almost every room in the house for a seamless, consistent look.

Kitchen
Ideal — SPC

Waterproof, easy to clean, handles dropped utensils and spills.

Living & Hallways
Excellent

Handles high traffic and creates a clean, unbroken open-plan surface.

Bedrooms
Good — WPC

WPC’s softer feel shines here. SPC works with quality underlay.

Bath & Laundry
Yes — SPC

Fully waterproof. Maintain expansion gaps and silicone the perimeter.

Stairs
Yes — glue-down

Requires glue-down with stair nosings. More complex installation.

Outdoors / Drains
Not recommended

Use tiles or commercial-grade vinyl for these environments.

How to choose the right hybrid

A simple decision framework, in the order we’d actually walk you through it in a showroom:

  1. Pick your core type first. SPC for most rooms, WPC for bedrooms or premium apartments.
  2. Choose a wear layer of 0.5mm or above. Anything less won’t hold up in a busy home.
  3. Match plank size to the room. Wide and long planks suit open-plan spaces. Standard planks suit smaller rooms.
  4. Pick colour for longevity, not trend. Mid-tone oaks and warm neutrals age best — and dominate 2026 styling.
  5. Check the acoustic rating if you’re in a strata building. Some body corporates require specific IIC ratings.
  6. Budget for underlay if it isn’t pre-attached. A 2mm cork or IXPE adds $8–15/m² and significantly improves comfort.

Frequently asked questions

Is hybrid flooring waterproof?

Yes. Both SPC and WPC hybrid flooring are 100% waterproof at the core level. Unlike laminate, hybrid will not swell, warp or delaminate from water exposure. You can safely use it in kitchens, bathrooms and laundries.

How long does hybrid flooring last?

A quality hybrid floor with a 0.5mm+ wear layer typically lasts 15–25 years in a residential setting with normal use. Premium products with thicker wear layers can push beyond that.

Can hybrid flooring be installed over tiles?

Yes. Hybrid’s click-lock floating system can be installed directly over existing tiles as long as the surface is level (within 3mm over 2 metres). Deep grout lines may need a thin levelling compound first. This saves significant demolition cost.

Is hybrid flooring good for pets?

Yes. SPC hybrid in particular is highly scratch-resistant and handles claws well. The waterproof surface means pet accidents won’t damage the floor. We recommend SPC with a 0.5mm+ wear layer for homes with dogs.

Does hybrid flooring need underlay?

Some hybrid products come with pre-attached underlay (cork or IXPE). If yours doesn’t, adding a 1.5–2mm underlay is recommended for improved comfort, sound absorption and minor subfloor levelling. Don’t use thick underlay (3mm+) — it can compromise the click-lock joints.

Can you put hybrid flooring in a bathroom?

Yes — SPC hybrid is suitable for bathrooms. The core is completely waterproof. Ensure proper expansion gaps around all edges and use silicone sealant around the perimeter if the bathroom sees heavy water use.

How does hybrid compare to laminate flooring?

Hybrid is waterproof; laminate is only water-resistant. Hybrid is more dimensionally stable and handles temperature fluctuations better. Laminate is generally cheaper and can offer a slightly more realistic timber look at lower price points. For wet areas, hybrid wins. For dry rooms on a budget, laminate is a solid choice.
